Man United have turned down a decent bid from West Ham for Scott McTominay.
Right now, Manchester United’s focus is firmly fixated on selling players before they identify possible replacements. Money needs to be generated by Erik ten Hag at this point in time.
The club have some pretty decent footballers on their books who aren’t playing with regularity. The problem is that these guys are massively overpaid, meaning the Reds are finding it tough to sell.
Harry Maguire is among that group, attracting heavy interest from West Ham. Another Reds player that David Moyes seems keen on signing is Scott McTominay.
According to the latest from the Manchester Evening News, United have rejected a £30m bid for the star. At this stage, sources doubt whether another move for McTominay will be made.
The claim believes United did not ‘provisionally plan’ to sell McTominay this summer, though they’ve found an ‘attainable’ replacement in the form of Sofyan Amrabat should a deal happen.
McTominay has slipped down the pecking order over the last twelve months, even losing minutes to the emerging Kobbie Mainoo during pre-season before the latter picked up an injury.
As a result of that problem, United are reluctant to sell McTominay unless they receive an acceptable fee. They believe that fee would be around the £40-50m mark.
The verdict
United will struggle to receive much more than £30m for McTominay. He’s a decent squad player, but that’s a large chunk of change the Reds could re-invest into the squad.
From Ten Hag’s viewpoint, this deal will only be sanctioned if the money is there to replace McTominay with Amrabat. Otherwise, this would leave United a man light in midfield, which would obviously be less than ideal.
Do we think McTominay will head to West Ham? It’s probably too soon to say…
