Man United have eyes on Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi as an option to replace Harry Maguire at centre-back.
The Red Devils are set to start yet another Premier League campaign in just a few days. Manchester United’s squad is looking somewhat different this time around, though there’s still work to do for Erik ten Hag – both incoming and outgoing.
Harry Maguire’s name has been in the headlines recently, with a move to West Ham United looking pretty close.
Then, the hunt to replace the Englishman will begin. Several names have been linked with filling that void and over the last 24 hours, another name has been thrown into the mix; Marc Guehi.
It’s the Daily Mail with the story. They believe that the 23-year-old Premier League defender is among the ‘contenders’ to replace Maguire at the heart of the back four this summer.
The ex-Chelsea man has had a solid couple of years for Crystal Palace, seeing his individual stock rise as a result. However, the problem here could be transfer fee. United are working on a limited budget this summer and Guehi would not come cheaply, as the Eagles are under no pressure to sell.
The verdict
I cannot see this one happening. I’d expect the club to move for someone who will come without the Premier League tax, though age-wise, Guehi is perfect.
Ten Hag will want to bring someone in who he can mould into a starting defender when the time is right for Raphael Varane to take a back seat.
Although Guehi would be an excellent candidate for that role, I just think he’ll prove to be far too expensive for the sort of budget that United are working with.
