Man United are now looking to make their move to sign Amadou Onana.
Manchester United seem intent on adding some extra quality to their midfield this summer. The Old Trafford club are looking to replace the outbound Fred, as Erik ten Hag continues to overhaul the playing squad.
Doing so is easier said than done. The Red Devils are working on a tighter budget this summer and there’s a feeling United will have to sell before they can buy any further players.
Several players have been linked with filling that midfield void. None more so than Sofyan Amrabat.
However, The Guardian believe United are yet to make any progress on that front. Instead, they reckon Everton’s Amadou Onana is atop the midfield wishlist right now.
According to their sources, United have made an ‘approach’ to Everton over possibly signing the 21-year-old.
Apparently, Ten Hag is keen to address his team’s lack of physicality and has turned his focus into bringing in a commanding central midfielder.
Everton, understandably, are reluctant to lose Onana, who cost £33m from Lille just a year ago. The Belgian is seen as a ‘key player’ for manager Sean Dyche.
It would take a bid of at least £50m for Everton to sell Onana this summer, though they could be entitled to ask for even more, given the astronomical fees in the midfielder market during this window.
Their stance is that Onana’s value will only continue to grow if he has a good second season, while Everton are not under pressure to sell a big-money player in order to fund other transfer moves.
The verdict
All this leads me to believe is that United will find it tough to sign Onana this summer. With money being a little tighter, I just don’t see how the club will generate these sort of funds.
I still reckon a deal to bring in Amrabat is far more likely, given the lower fees involved.
