Matej Kovar has completed a permanent move away from the club, heading to Bayer Leverkusen.
Manchester United Football Club have been making drastic changes to their squad over the last season or so. Those adjustments are set to continue between now and the end of the transfer window.
The goalkeeper room looks drastically different. Andre Onana has been signed. Tom Heaton is now the back-up option. David de Gea is no longer here, while Dean Henderson is also likely to be sold this summer.
There have also been rumours about the future of Matej Kovar. The young goalkeeper looked pretty good during pre-season tour, so it was surprising to see talks about a permanent transfer.
Now, United have confirmed the permanent departure of the 23-year-old, subject to international clearance. The young man has joined Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, as his development will now continue in Germany.
The Czech goalkeeper brings to an end a five-year stay in Manchester, impressing at U21 level and also while out on loan.
United seemingly felt that the time was right to move Kovar on, particularly as he looked pretty good in pre-season which could have increased his transfer value.
Kovar looked like the right stylistic fit for this Ten Hag system, which is why I thought he was someone who the club would have kept around in that third choice role when Heaton returns from injury.
Instead, the club have taken the decision to sell Kovar. Presumably because they do not think he’d be playing all that much over the next few years. Onana’s excellent performance yesterday only reaffirms that belief.
There’s no information out there on the fee, but you’d expect Kovar to fetch in at least £5million in transfer cost.
