A Man United move to sign Benjamin Pavard is now unlikely to happen.
Manchester United are now stuck in a weird place. Erik ten Hag has spoken positively about Harry Maguire in the public eye, though you get the impression the Dutchman wants him gone.
The decision lies with the player, who is choosing to remain at the Theatre of Dreams. However, this is now having a knock-on effect on the rest of the Reds’ transfer business.
Ten Hag was looking at bringing in Benjamin Pavard to replace the Englishman. However, that move is now in serious jeopardy.
It’s Sky Sports News’ Dharmesh Sheth providing the latest information on that front. He says that United’s move to sign the 27-year-old is now ‘looking unlikely’ due to the fact that Maguire will stay.
The Reds are hampered by FFP constraints and they needed Maguire to be sold in order to generate the funds required to bring in Pavard.
It’s a tricky situation as it’s up to Maguire to make the final decision that could have serious implications over the course of the season. I’d prefer Maguire to move on, as I think it’s best for everyone.
However, he wants the money and you absolutely cannot fault him for that. United gave him the contract. He signed it. The blame lies at the foot of the club.
As a fourth or fifth option, Maguire is decent enough. The problem is that he’s struggled for the last couple of years and I do not see him recovering from that – whatever happens.
This deal collapsing means that Maguire will probably see out his contract here in Manchester, spending the next couple of years as a Red Devil, watching his career dwindle away, then leaving for free.
