The club have provided an official update on Raphael Varane’s injury.
Manchester United Football Club are struggling with injuries right now. I’m not sure what’s happening on the training ground, but the lads are dropping like flies.
Luke Shaw is out for the foreseeable, while reports yesterday claimed that Raphael Varane could be out for up to six weeks.
Now, the official club website have given their latest information on the Frenchman, confirming the injury blow to Varane. The key star is set to miss Arsenal away this weekend, while United say Rapha is out for a ‘few weeks’.
While it seems like Varane will not miss the initial six weeks that was first feared, losing the World cup winner for any prolonged period of time is a problem. Rapha has formed an excellent bond with Lisandro Martinez back there. It’s going to be hard to replicate that.
This is the ninth injury Varane has suffered since making the move to Old Trafford. He is injury prone at this stage of his career. That is a real problem. It’s all well and good him putting in world-class performances for four months of the season, but then he’s missing that much time again, over the course of the long campaign.
The good news is that Victor Lindelof is a quality back-up option. The Ice man has overtaken Harry Maguire in the pecking order and is now third choice. This gives him a chance to get more minutes under his belt – which I’m absolutely not against.
I guess the problem comes if either Lindelof or Martinez now pick up an injury. With Shaw out, that’d mean the only other option right now is Harry Maguire. He’s hardly flavour of the month. Nor will he be motivated to put his body on the line for a club that made it blatantly clear do not want him.
