Jonny Evans is now looking like getting a one-year contract at Man United after the injury to Raphael Varane.
For Manchester United, the pressure is mounting. Erik ten Hag’s side have started the season poorly. Injuries are starting to pile up. New signings are not being made due to FFP constraints.
The club are now exploring the loan market at left-back and central midfield, though at centre-half, they could turn to a wise old head. Not too long ago, we covered a claim which stated Jonny Evans was under consideration to sign a longer term contract at Old Trafford following a decent pre-season.
Now, the BBC’s Simon Stone, who is usually bang on the money with United news, has given his take. He believes that as a result of the recent Raphael Varane injury news, the Northern Irish defender ‘now looks certain’ to be given a one-year deal at the Theatre of Dreams.
Check out Simon Stone’s tweet here:
Honestly, I’m not against it. As a stand-in option, Evans can do a decent enough job. I wouldn’t want him playing meaningful minutes on a regular basis, but, during an injury crisis against some mid-level Premier League sides, he should have enough quality around him to get the job done.
The issue I have is that United should not be settling. Their incompetence over the last few years is now starting to become a problem. Players aren’t being sold due to their inflated wages, which is having a knock-on effect on the money available for the gaffer to spend.
All this is not Evans’ fault. Far from it in fact. With Varane’s injury problems not easing up anytime soon, coupled with Ten Hag’s lack of faith in Maguire, I can genuinely see the 35-year-old playing his fair share of games this season. Make of that what you will.
