Andre Onana has made a big decision on his international football future for his native Cameroon.
Manchester United Football Club will be feeling good about their new number one in the form of Andre Onana.
The ex-Inter Milan shot-stopper has started life in Manchester nicely, making some important saves while also showcasing his immense ability with the ball at feet.
Question marks have surrounded Onana’s future since the FIFA World Cup in 2022, after being sent home from the tournament in November. The shot-stopper would subsequently retire from international football. Now, about nine months later, Onana has made a decision on his international future.
According to the official club website, Onana has now confirmed he will ‘proudly’ represent Cameroon during the upcoming international break once again.
He will feature in the squad for Cameroon’s AFCON match against Burundi, with Onana releasing an emotional statement, explaining the decision behind his return.
Honestly, I fully respect and agree with the decision. Representing your nation is a massive honour under any circumstance. Onana has played 34 times for Cameroon and no doubt he wants to add to that before he hangs up the gloves for good.
Walking away would have been a massive decision. Now, the fact that he’s ready to give it another go just shows how much he misses wearing his nation’s jersey with pride.
To have the chance to play for Cameroon at a major tournament is an opportunity that’s too good to turn down.
From a United standpoint, it’s somewhat gutting but you’d hope that the coaching staff will have prepared for this eventuality. Onana will now be missing for the better part of a month in the new year due to AFCON (assuming Cameroon qualify). This is why the club chose to sign Altay Bayindir.
