Sofyan Amrabat made his full debut for Manchester United on Tuesday evening as we beat Crystal Palace 3-0 in the League Cup.
The Moroccan midfielder spent the first half playing at left-back, filling in for the injured Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Sergio Reguilon. He got the crowd onside with some impressive defensive work, but also floated in to midfield when United were in possession.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Amrabat joked he would even play in goal if it meant playing for United.
I told the manager I will play where [he] needs me and where the team needs me, even if it is a goalkeeper! I play where I can help the team, today it was left-back. I had a bit of a free role, I think you saw I played a bit in midfield, so it was nice, it was good.
I think it was a perfect night. We played very well and, most importantly, we won 3-0. I played one hour, so I think it was perfect. Since I was a child I worked for this [moment]. I worked very hard for my whole career and life [for this], so it was amazing to play here. Today is a Tuesday and the stadium was full, it is fantastic.
I am fit but not 100 per cent yet. But I think that is normal. I have not had a perfect pre-season, because of the transfer and everything, but I’m working very hard now to get there and I think the game today was a good game for me. A next step and I hope to continue like this and I will do everything to be, as soon as possible, 100 per cent.
Amrabat came on in the final minute for our 1-0 away win against Burnley at the weekend but Tuesday’s win was won in much more convincing fashion. The midfielder spoke about the plans for improvement ahead.
Against Burnley, we got a very important win and we showed big character. Today, we wanted to give the fans something to enjoy and I hope we can continue like this. It is clear that United is a huge club and we need to win. The pressure is high but we won this – and the manager says, every day, you need to win and that is what we want. We push very hard every day and hopefully we can win a lot and we can give the fans a lot more.
