Mason Mount hasn’t been selected for England duty, with Gareth Southgate now explaining why.
Manchester United Football Club have made a slow start to the campaign, though as we’ve alluded to almost daily at this point, they can point to injuries as a potential explanation.
Among those who have been sidelined for prolonged periods of time is Mason Mount. He’d start the first couple of matches, before going down with a month-long issue.
To Mount’s credit, he’s played well since returning, looking sharp on the ball, showcasing his skills while also proving his worth in the work-rate department.
I naturally assumed he’d be recalled to the England squad as a result. After all, he has been a Gareth Southgate favourite for many years. However, to my surprise, he was not named among the party for the Three Lions’ next couple of games.
With the United star snubbed from international duty, questions were starting to be asked. Now, the England manager has explained his reasoning, claiming he hasn’t ‘done enough’ to get back into the squad.
Check out what the England manager had to say in full here:
“Physically he’s getting back up to a level,” Southgate is quoted as saying by the MEN. “He’s been an important player for us and we like him a lot. But I didn’t think he’d done enough to be ahead of the others at this moment in time.”
Mount is one of the best English midfielders in the business. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that he’s only recently returned from injury. I’d certainly have him in there ahead of Kalvin Phillips, who barely gets a kick for City, nevermind a full game. Jordan Henderson is playing his football on another continent, while Conor Gallagher just isn’t very good…
Although I’m gutted for Mount on a personal level, it is good news for United. It means the ex-Chelsea man now has some extra time to build up the fitness levels and continue to thrive at club level, rather than having to play a couple of games for England.
Let’s hope Mason isn’t too downbeat about the exclusion. Instead, I think he’ll use it to fuel his career.
