England beat Italy 3-1 yesterday at Wembley to confirm qualification for Euro 2024. After going a goal behind, a Harry Kane penalty saw them draw level before a fantastic goal from Marcus Rashford gave them the lead, before Kane scored again to beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of most England goals at Wembley.
Rashford is also in England squads but isn’t always in the starting XI. After being given the opportunity to shine by Gareth Southgate, after a lack of goals for United, Rashford took his chance.
Speaking after the game to Channel 4, Rashford reflected on the game.
I feel like I am ready to kick on. It is about winning as many games as possible for me, whether you start or are on the bench. When it is your moment, you have to take it.
We started the game well. We were unlucky to concede the goal. A couple of times in the first half, they caught us on the overload. We kept cool heads and trying to play the football we had played in training, and it paid off.
Southgate singled Rashford out for praise in his post-match interview.
Our front players worked unbelievably for the team. Marcus Rashford, I don’t know how much ground he covered today.
