Man United had scouts keeping an eye on FC Porto goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, over the weekend.
Over the summer, Manchester United signed a goalkeeper in the form of Andre Onana. The ex-Inter Milan shot-stopper was tasked with replacing David de Gea in between the sticks. It’s fair to say he’s endured a mixed start to the 2023/24 campaign.
However, when I woke up this morning, I was not expecting to see United linked with another top tier goalkeeper in the form of Diogo Costa.
It’s A Bola with the claim. They state that United sent scouts to watch the 24-year-old over the weekend, as Porto took on Vizela on Sunday. Costa would keep a clean sheet during a 2-0 victory.
The article outlines United interest in Costa, claiming that they could make a move for the Portugal international in the mid-season window.
It’s claimed that the player’s position is one of the ‘more deficient’ at Old Trafford, with United set to make further scouting trips to watch Costa over the coming weeks and months.
Costa’s asking price is considerably more than the £45m United paid to sign Onana. Porto would demand at least €75m (£65m) to let their number one shot-stopper leave in either January or next summer – which is obviously a massive amount.
United have always had success when signing players from Portugal, though I just do not see how this move happens – particularly in January. I understand that Andre Onana could possibly head to AFCON, but there’s absolutely no way the club are going to spend such a massive amount of money (that they likely don’t have) on another goalkeeper.
If I’m honest, this feels like paper talk. The only way this move happens is if Onana is unhappy at United and he demands a move away first.
