Erik ten Hag is said to have a strained relationship with centre-back, Raphael Varane.
Manchester United Football Club have been pretty poor to start this season. Erik ten Hag’ squad has been dealing with major injuries, though on top of that, it does look like the players aren’t working for each other.
It led me to believe that there were potential fractures growing in the dressing room, be it among the players themselves, or potentially with the manager and coaching staff.
We were all left scratching our heads during the Manchester derby, when Jonny Evans was given the starting job over multi-time Champions League winner, Raphael Varane. The Frenchman has been on the bench ever since. With the former now out injured, it’ll be intriguing to see who plays…
Well, The Telegraph (subscription required) have now provided some information on Varane’s situation. They state that Ten Hag’s relationship with the United star has ‘become strained’ after the player was dropped for the derby.
Apparently, a discussion was had between player and manager after that decision, with Ten Hag recently claiming that there was no issue between the pair.
If I was Varane, I’d be super frustrated. He was one of our key players last term, emerging as a real on-field leader, elite-level defender and outright winner. Ten Hag was loving what the Frenchman brought to the table last season. I’m not quite sure what has changed…
I understand Harry Maguire deserves his minutes at this stage, but just play the pair together. Let’s not mess around here. Varane and Maguire, albeit two right-footers, is an infinitely better partnership than Maguire and Evans.
Hopefully, we see Varane start today. If he doesn’t play, then I genuinely think this issue is far deeper than we all realise. It could even result in the Frenchman leaving when January rolls around.
