Harry Maguire has worked his way back into the good books of Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United’s 2023/24 term has been mixed at best. The Red Devils came into the campaign with promise aplenty, though it just hasn’t panned out well at all.
Erik ten Hag must be frustrated with the situation – both on and off the field. The injuries are piling up, club ownership issues remain up in the air while some players have their own problems to worry about (Jadon Sancho, in particular).
In amongst the madness, some players are rising to the challenge. None more so than Harry Maguire. We’ve all been quick to criticise the Englishman when he has struggled, so we have to be equally positive about him when doing well.
ESPN have run a story on Maguire, about how he’s rediscovering his place within the United squad. It has been quite the turnaround for the ex-Leicester City man.
The author of the piece, Rob Dawson, states that the United manager has been ‘impressed’ with Maguire’s attitude after he was stripped of the club captaincy over the summer. Obviously, that’s not an easy thing to take, particularly at this elite level.
As one ESPN source puts it, the 30-year-old United man is now a player that Ten Hag can ‘trust’ amid the club’s slow start to the season. I don’t think any situation epitomises it more than the Fulham game. Maguire picked up a early head injury, but continued to fight on and put in a Man of the Match display.
Honestly, he deserves immense credit for this fightback. Maguire is now among the first names on the team sheet, when it would have been easy for him to just give up and look to seal a transfer away.
