Man United are ready to make Antoine Griezmann a mega-earner at the club, in an effort to bring in the attacker.
Over the last decade or so, Manchester United have changed their mantra. This club used to spend their resources developing youngsters and utilising their excellent academy. More recently, they’ve made big-money signings in an attempt to return to the top. It hasn’t worked.
Yet, true to form under the current regime, United are not giving up on throwing the cash left, right and centre at older players who are likely past their best and will command massive wages.
This time, it’s Antoine Griezmann linked with a huge payday at the Theatre of Dreams. It comes from El Nacional, relayed by Mundo Deportivo. Apparently, they reckon United are ready to triple the wages of the 32-year-old, in a bid to lure the player to Old Trafford in January.
Griezmann has been linked with United many times before. Those occasions were during the Frenchman’s peak years so a deal at that time would have made sense. However, right now, I cannot help but feel this would be a massive mistake.
In terms of cost, it’d be worth around £350k-a-week to Griezmann, who is no doubt intrigued by the prospect of making so much money at this stage in his career. You’d also imagine he’d request a fairly long contract, similar to a deal that Casemiro signed last summer.
I just reckon this would be another massive mistake. United would probably get one or two decent years out of Griezmann, before he’d start showing his age and then not even be close to the required standard to make a positive impact week-in-week-out.
