Man United are among the sides keeping an eye on Ivan Toney ahead of the next couple of transfer windows.
Among the positions of need for Manchester United is a new striker, assuming Anthony Martial will leave when given a reasonable opportunity.
Rasmus Hojlund is carrying the full weight of the forward position right now and he does need help. Several names have been linked with filling that void.
Over the last 24 hours, the Daily Mail have thrown a familiar name into the mix yet again; Ivan Toney.
The Brentford striker is banned due to breaking betting rules a year or so ago, though he is still expected to be hot property in the market.
United are said to be among the clubs ‘closely monitoring’ the Premier League striker ahead of the next two transfer windows. It’s also stated that Toney is ‘expected to leave’ Brentford next summer, with the Reds facing competition from both Arsenal and Chelsea for his signature.
As things stand, you get the feeling that Arsenal is the most likely destination for Toney. He’d get to stay in London, while they’re lacking that out and out finisher in the number nine department, whereas in Manchester he’d be in direct competition with Hojlund.
I actually think that Toney would be an astute piece of business, assuming he is still capable of playing at the levels he was at before picking up the suspension.
He is not going to come cheaply, make no mistake about that. United will have to do some persuading in order for Toney to choose Old Trafford, though. I would honestly be surprised if Erik ten Hag can win this race.
