Just like clockwork, Erik ten Hag is now fighting for his Man United survival after some players’ support has started to waver.
Time and time again, a core group of Manchester United players have been more than willing to throw several manager’s under the bus in order to save their own skin. It’s a true sad state of affairs – and it could be playing out again.
It’s ESPN with the story, as their author, Rob Dawson, shares the latest. It’s worth noting he is an extremely reliable source when it comes to all things Manchester United, so it does lead me to believe there’s genuine truth in the story.
It’s stated that the boss, Erik ten Hag, is now ‘battling’ to keep key players onside in the wake of a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.
The performance itself was wholly uninspiring. The manager did not cover himself in glory, nor did the players, who did not look interested in putting in the effort during the encounter against Eddie Howe’s men.
Dawson writes that a group within the first-team squad are now ‘disillusioned’ under the Dutchman, after a tenth defeat of the season.
There are a number of players who remain behind Ten Hag, but there are concerns within the club that the mood will dip even further if negative results continue during a huge couple of weeks for the Red Devils.
Among the issues for the players is Ten Hag’s ‘intense’ training sessions since the pre-season, which once again highlights an unwillingness to work for this group of mentally fragile footballers.
The gaffer has, apparently, tried to cool tensions in the dressing room by publicly backing his players. Whether that works remains to be seen.
Let’s hope that the lads decide to back the manager, though I have serious doubts.
