Aston Villa Stamp Their Passport for the Title Race
While Garth Crookes wrote off Aston Villa’s chances of winning the Premier League title as ‘sheer fantasy’ on BBC Sport, the reality is only Manchester City have a better record than Villa over the last 38 games in 2023. So, with Villa beating both Pep Guardiola’s men and Arsenal within the space of week, evidence suggests that lazy pundits need to start taking Villa seriously.
We’ve seen such a lack of respect before, when Leicester City won the title in 2015/16. Then, the national media only really acknowledged their chances, when they were lifting the Premier League over their heads.
Aston Villa arguably have a more talented squad than that Leicester City one (although, the first XI would be more of a debate) and a better manager. The 15-game consecutive home winning run Villa are currently on is a useful backbone to have in their challenge too. If Villa can keep it going until the end of the year against a couple of teams in the bottom three, then they should be cemented in the title race come the end of the year.
