Andre Gomes will be “like a new signing” for Everton after his impressive return to action.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson hauled the Portuguese midfielder’s goal-scoring performance against Tottenham last Saturday as “excellent”.
The 2-1 loss at Goodison Park was his first outing of the campaign after suffering a calf injury in the opening week of the season.
The 30-year-old’s Toffees career has been blighted by injury since his loan from Barcelona was made permanent for £22million in June 2019 having missed 27 games on the sidelines.
He has also struggled for form amid the club’s gradual decline but could face a new lease of life under Sean Dyche who has changed their fortunes despite the 10-point deduction last month.
Robinson claimed that many had forgotten Gomes’ quality but can now prove key for Everton.
“When a player has been out for so long, you’d forgotten how good they are,” he told Football Insider.
“Andre Gomes against Tottenham reminded Everton fans who hadn’t remembered and others around the Premier League, pundits and ex-players how good he can be.
“He was excellent, but the whole Everton side were excellent too.
“Sean Dyche has got the club in a good place at the moment, but with Gomes coming back into that squad is huge.
“Getting his goal as well and getting that [disallowed] assist. The way that he played, it’s going to feel like a new signing.
“I don’t see him looking for a move or getting a move in January because of the financial situation.
“For Dyche having his hands tied financially, to have Gomes come back is the equivalent of a new signing.”
