Sean Dyche will fight “tooth and nail” to keep Amadou Onana if Everton accept a bid in January.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed the Belgium international has been the Toffees’ “best” player this season and vital in their recent success.
As revealed by Football Insider (7 January), the club have slapped a £60million January asking price on Onana with Arsenal exploring a potential deal for the midfielder.
The 22-year-old has been a mainstay for Sean Dyche this season and has started all but one game he has been available for in all competitions.
Robinson urged the club to hang on to their star players, especially Onana, with a view to selling some in the summer to help fix their crippling financial woes.
“Onana has been a quality player for Everton this season,” he told Football Insider.
“He was pivotal for them when they put those back-to-back clean sheets together a few weeks back and has been a huge part of their recent success.
“But I can imagine there would be a big pushback from Dyche if they were to accept a bid for him in January.
“We know their financial situation. Dyche’s hands are tied and they’re unable to really bring in other players.
“You don’t want to lessen the squad that they’ve got because they’re still in a relegation battle.
“Recent performances have not been up to the standard of around a month ago.
“The manager will certainly not want to lose his best player in January, although there will be a conversation if a big bid does come in for him.
“The manager will fight tooth and nail to keep the squad together until the summer, and then conversations will be had.”
