Chelsea’s current owners have made some bad decisions during their tenure so far, and many of those are up for debate.
Some might not agree with this take, but I think it was a huge mistake selling Ruben Loftus-Cheek to AC Milan in 2023. And that’s not just because of the top form he is showing now.
EXCLUSIVE! Inside Chelsea’s early plans for the summer transfer window – will they spend big again and what positions are they looking at? News on Sesko, Osimhen, Gyokeres, Toney, Robinson, Davies, Kilman, Andersen, Guehi, Diomande, Todibo, and much more!
We were playing him at wing-back on many occasions, I mean what was that!? If we played him in his best position as an 8 or 10 and put trust in him with a run of starts there, he would be doing for Chelsea what he is doing for AC Milan right now – I have no doubts and I never had any doubts on that.
Instead we basically played him in every single position under the sun other than goalkeeper, and continued to misuse a player who ironically would be loved by Mauricio Pochettino.
Loftus-Cheek scored two more goals for Milan last night, and he continues to show the world what he is capable of. An England recall is surely around the corner.
Pundit Owen Hargreaves has been impressed too. In words via The Daily Mail, he says:
“Just looking at it, I can’t believe Ruben Loftus-Cheek is 28 already. I know he’s always been a star as a young man but he probably should have made this move (abroad) a little bit sooner.
“He’s such a talented guy. Probably played a little bit deeper at times. This is where he’s at his absolute best, arriving in the box with his size. He’s a good header of the ball. He’s got goals in him.
“It shows he’s in a really good place, in a team that plays to his strengths. And he’s scoring goals. That one (the second goal), he’s a little bit fortunate, it arrives to him.
“I think the confidence has grown. We’ve always known that he’s such a talented player, he’s obviously not a boy anymore, 28, he should be at his absolute best.”
