Trevoh Chalobah has revealed he will play “wherever I’m needed” after starting in a back three against Brentford.
Chelsea have predominately played a back four this season but last time out against Brentford Mauricio Pochettino set his side up in a back three for the first time.
Against The Bees Chalobah was deployed in the centre of a back three alongside Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill in what was his second consecutive start having started against Leeds.
Having missed the first half of the season through injury having Chalobah available again is a huge boost to Mauricio Pochettino given the injury crisis at Chelsea and the 24 year old is a player who is hugely versatile.
The academy graduate can play centre back, right back and midfield which is where he started his career before Blues legend Claude Makelele convinced him to change to centre back.
Speaking to the club’s official website Chalobah revealed he was comfortable in a back three but would play wherever he was needed:
“It’s a role I’m comfortable in and I’ll play wherever I’m needed, I’ve played in the middle of a three, on the right under Thomas Tuchel, I played on the left in France too. It’s just about what is best for the team.”
“I felt good in that Brentford game. The legs felt stronger. Once you get back into the flow of matches, it becomes easier.”
With injuries to Ben Chilwell and Levi Colwill it’s possible that Chalobah will keep his place in the team for tonight’s game against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
