Man United are said to be considering making another offer to sign Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton.
Manchester United Football Club will sign at least one defender this summer. Raphael Varane has left, while the future of Jonny Evans also remains unclear. Both were regulars last term and their minutes need replacing.
Matthijs de Ligt’s name now appears to be atop the wishlist right now, with the Red Devils being priced out of a move to sign Jarrad Branthwaite.
Like most, I just assumed the signing of De Ligt would mean United wouldn’t move for Branthwaite. According to the Daily Mail, that isn’t necessarily the case. United could actually sign both players this summer, assuming they have the funds to do that.
United want De Ligt to play on the right-side of central defence, while they are yet to give up on signing Branthwaite, who they like for the left-side position, next to De Ligt. However, it is reliant on generating funds from sales.
It’s claimed the Reds are ‘weighing up’ making an improved offer to sign the 21-year-old Everton man, with Branthwaite growing ‘increasingly agitated’ at the lack of transfer movement this summer. That could hint that Branthwaite himself would want the move.
With Dan Ashworth now in place, I’d like to think we’ll now start to see some movement on the transfer front. A move for a centre-half of some description has to be a priority. I would not be against signing both Branthwaite and De Ligt if the club can move on Victor Lindelof or Harry Maguire. If both those guys stay, then signing a pair of centre-halves this summer could well be overkill.
