Darwin Nunez’s scoring streak for Uruguay has seen him equal the legendary Hector Scarone.
The Liverpool striker is in the United States playing at the Copa America, with Uruguay currently top of Group C.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side thrashed Bolivia 5-0 on Friday and Nunez got himself on the scoresheet alongside Manchester United’s Facundo Pellistr and Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur.
As a result, Liverpool’s star has now scored a staggering ten goals across seven successive games for his country – the latter being a record.
He’s bagged goals against Costa Rica, Brazil, Panama, Mexico, Bolivia and Argentina before his history making shot against Bolivia again this week.
No Uruguayan player has done that since the country’s iconic star Scarone did between 1927 and 1928.
Scarone – who played for Barcelona during that time – was considered one of the best players in the world in that period.
He netted 31 goals in 51 appearances for the South Americans.
Nunez, meanwhile, has 18 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this term.
His international teammate, Luis Suarez, who also starred for Liverpool may be the country’s top scoring player with 68 goals, but even he hasn’t been as frequent as this.
Suarez had not played for Uruguay since the end of the 2022 World Cup but a year later returned for the USA 2026 qualifiers.
And for the Copa America he has worn the No.9, which had been in Nunez’s possession.
Vacating the number for a national hero earned him praise from Suarez. “He, with the humility that he has, a very good kid, said ‘no, Luis, you’re the No. 9, I’m going to respect you when you’re not there if I’m going to grab it’”.
Suarez came on for Nunez in the second half against Bolivia in the 83rd minute, with Bentancur netting their 5th six minutes later.
Uruguay last won Copa America in 2011. La Celeste and Argentina have dominated the competition with 15 titles each.
