Though Bayern Munich were not especially impressive in their recent friendly against FC Düren, 17-year-old midfielder Javi Fernandez himself impressed quite a bit with his mature decision making and eerie calm on the ball. This is nothing new. In the 18 months he has been at Bayern since his switch from Atletico Madrid, Javi has impressed one coach after another. Now it seems it is Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany’s turn to be impressed and it seems the young Spaniard will have the time to prove it. Sky Sport’s Kerry Hau, as captured by @iMiaSanMia reports this:
Bayern are planning to offer Javier Fernández a professional contract. The club is happy with the development of the 17-year old Spaniard and there are no plans to loan him out. Fernández will mainly play for the U19s and FCB II but will also get chances under Vincent Kompany with the first team
It is important to remember that Javi’s contract expires next year, so a contract extension will need to happen rather soon. His 18th birthday is in November, so perhaps the club is waiting until then to give him that professional contract. Hopefully the club will not let his contract run down as far as Paul Wanner did and get one of the club’s biggest talents locked down pronto.
