Rumors that Bayern Munich are looking to offload some of their senior players are plentiful this summer, with the likes of Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry reportedly available for sale. The latter addressed these rumors in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:
Do you expect the coach or management to come to you and say, Serge, this is what we want you to do or not? Or should you go to the people in charge and ask about your prospects?
Gnabry: “I think that most of us are experienced players. We don’t need to be told about our prospects like 18-year-olds. Many of us are already past that point. We all know what we can do, we have played at the top level for years.”
• The players of your generation include leaders Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman. However, FC Bayern are now saying internally that the hierarchy in the team needs to change after all these years. Do you understand this approach?
Gnabry: “Good question. Let’s put it this way: It’s probably normal and understandable that there’s a lot of public outrage when you don’t win one of the league titles after eleven in a row. The lesson we have to learn from this is that we have to start playing better and more consistently. But again: we’re all top players and Bayern have one of the best squads in the world. So we shouldn’t let that bring us down.”
For Gnabry, the sense of self belief is there…but will the club have the same confidence in him?
