Keith Hackett has taken to social media to post about one particular incident during the West Ham United vs Chelsea clash.
Max Kilman came out after the game and suggested that the performance and result was a ‘wake up call’ for him and his teammates.
However, West Ham were so far off it that a mere ‘wake up call’ won’t be enough. Big changes are needed.
Julen Lopetegui will be fully aware that a lot of work needs to be done, if he is to get his team firing on all cylinders.
A lot of hard work needs to be done on the training ground, but more importantly, he needs to get his players zoned in on the actual system and playing style that he wants to implement.
Despite all of that though, and the poor performance in general on Saturday, the Hammers were definitely hard done by in one particular phase of the game.
Keith Hackett blasts West Ham vs Chelsea incident
Don’t get me wrong, the Hammers were awful on Saturday, but things could have been very different had we been awarded a penalty in the 30th minute of the contest when Crysencio Summerville was dragged down inside the box.
And Hackett took umbrage to the decision to wave away the incident.
The former football referee retired just before his 50th birthday in 1994, and in 2004 he was appointed as general manager of PGMOL.
West Ham fans of a certain age will be very familiar with Hackett. He was the man who sent off Tony Gale early on in the game during our FA Cup semi-final clash with Nottingham Forest at Villa Park back in 1991.
The Hammers fans blame Hackett for that decision, as it completely changed the course of the game.
Rivalries aside though, Hackett has seen all there is to see in the game, so when he talks about the state of refereeing today, we should all listen.
Hackett took to his official X account on Sunday, and ripped into the thought process behind failing to award the Hammers a penalty against Chelsea:
“The quality of decision making in the Premier League is at rock bottom. WHU not awarded a penalty kick after clear holding.“
I make Hackett right here. The state of modern day refereeing really is in the gutter, and something has to change…quickly.
Standard of Premier League refereeing in the mud
There are numerous rules that need to change in my opinion.
It’s not just the rules that are a problem as far as I’m concerned though – it’s the fact that the big clubs always seem to get decisions made in their favour.
It happens time and time again, and was evident at the London Stadium on Saturday afternoon, when Summerville was hauled down inside the box.
Maybe it’s just me being biased, but I really feel like we never get the rub of the green as a club, especially when we play against the so-called ‘big six’.
The old, ‘things balance out over the course of a season’ saying just isn’t true for the ‘other 14’ clubs as far as I’m concerned.
The standard of refereeing needs to change in England, and I really feel like importing officials from abroad may well be the way forward.
After the failure to award Crysencio Summerville during the West Ham vs Chelsea clash on Saturday, Keith Hackett made it clear that something’s not right.
Hopefully sweeping changes are made very soon indeed, because the current setup is rotten to the core.
