Paul Wanner has not yet committed to either Germany or Austria in terms of international allegiance. The 18-year-old is eligible for both countries and has so far played with Germany’s youth teams but is not “cap-tied” by virtue of not playing for either nation’s senior teams. Fellow Austrian and parent club Bayern Munich sporting director Christoph Freund may or may not have given him a hint on who to represent:
It’s his decision to make. As an Austrian myself, I would of course have nothing against him playing for Austria. But in general, Paul has to decide for himself and listen to his heart. I think Heidenheim is exactly the right environment for him. We are of course following him very closely and in contact because we have a plan for him.

Wanner blossoming into a world class player might negate the necessity of buying Florian Wirtz for the attacking midfield positions.
