Paul Merson will have really wound up the Tottenham Hotspur fanbase with his latest comments ahead of the West Ham United clash.
Just like Julen Lopetegui at West Ham, Ange Postecoglou is under real pressure at Tottenham right now, so Saturday’s Premier League clash is a vital one for both teams.
Spurs have actually been getting as much criticism as the Hammers this season, and that increased tenfold after they threw away a two-goal lead to lose to Brighton two weeks ago.
So it’s clear that a victory is very much needed for them just as much as it us for us.
Lopetegui spoke to reporters on Thursday, and annoyingly suggested that the clash with Tottenham is no different to any other game.
Let’s hope he’s not saying the same thing behind closed doors because this one means so much to the fans.
If our players are up for it, and all 100% on their games, they will have a chance of turning over Spurs.
It might actually be a good time to play them, just after an international break, and with so much pressure on Postecoglou to get a result.
Hilariously, Merson will have just really riled up their fanbase ahead of the match.
The game kicks off at 12:30 Saturday lunchtime, and both sets of fans are buzzing for the match to start.
West Ham won 4-1 last time out against Ipswich, whilst Tottenham suffered an embarrassing 3-2 defeat to Brighton.
And Merson used that result as a stick to beat Spurs with.
The well-renowned football pundit criticised them for being ‘Spursy’, when making his regular predictions for Sportskeeda.
Merson said, “This is a massive football match due to the intense rivalry between the two sides. Tottenham looked great for 45 minutes against Brighton & Hove Albion before the international break, but they eventually ended up doing what they’re know for during that 3-2 loss. The ‘Spursy tag seems to never leave them!”
“We saw the same thing happening during the game against Leicester City, now it’s happened again. When they’re 2-0 up and cruising, everything seems great. But as soon as they concede, no one wants to stand up for each other. That’s a worrying trend and a huge problem for Ange Postecoglou“, Merson continued.
“Spurs crumble too quickly under pressure. We’re only in October and we’ve seen it happen twice now. They were probably playing their best team against Brighton, I really don’t think there’s a lot wrong with that line up either. When things are going well, all their players want to get on the ball and do things. But when it’s not, no one seems to want the ball! This is the problem.”
Spurs fans will be absolutely fuming after hearing those comments won’t they!
They will be angry with the sentiment AND the fact that the remarks were made by a former Arsenal player who supports Chelsea!
Hopefully Merson’s comments don’t end up motivating Tottenham.
The Tottenham vs West Ham clash will leave the players on the pitch nowhere to hide.
And if Spurs are in a flaky, ‘Spursy’ mood, the Hammers have to show up in north London and take advantage.
