The centre-field portion of our team has been porous ( ‘cardboard-cutout like’ was actually how I described it) and any combination of Rodriguez, Alvarez, Soucek and Soler pared with an out of form Paquetá has been woeful in stopping opposition attacks and transitioning our own play from the back to the front.
The shortcomings in midfield have been well documented: It is a relief to see West Ham planning to do something about it. Here was another player originally discounted for West Ham, owing to a huge €100m release clause which Valencia have subsequently backtracked upon owing to their own financial position: Heresay states £25 million should do it.
At odds with West Ham’s stated suggestion of searching within the domestic leagues in England now for better value- but if a deal can be done for the 21 year old we ‘d all be desperately happy to find a box to box midfielder in claret and blue who can actually keep up with the opposition, tackle and pick a pass. We can all dream.
