A stunning new claim has been made about Ruben Amorim and his failed move to West Ham United, as he closes in on the Manchester United job.
Ruben Amorim was extremely close to becoming the new West Ham manager only six months ago, but Manchester United seem to be the club who have lured him away from Sporting, as he closes in on the Old Trafford vacancy.
Back in April, Amorim met with the Hammers hierarchy about potentially replacing David Moyes at the London Stadium.
However, West Ham chose to appoint Julen Lopetegui instead.
That decision was a strange one in my opinion, but that’s a debate for another day.
The real reason why the West Ham owners opted not to press ahead with a move to appoint Amorim was because of the sheer volume of staff he wanted to bring with him – he had allegedly already agreed terms to replace Moyes.
And that’s what makes a claim made by Jacob Steinberg just now so utterly bizarre…
Bizarre Ruben Amorim to West Ham claim as Manchester United job nears
The 39-year-old is one of the most highly sought-after young managers on the planet.
So it’s no surprise that Man United fans are absolutely buzzing at the prospect of his appointment.
However, things could have been so different had David Sullivan had the courage to appoint a manager who was unproven in the Premier League at the time.
And now Steinberg has taken to his official X account to clarify the situation.
He posted the below tweets:
I have two problems with what Steinberg is suggesting here. Firstly, how could it have been unrealistic if Amorim actually flew over to London to hold talks with West Ham?
And secondly, as mentioned earlier, he had allegedly provisionally agreed on terms to become the new Hammers boss.
I don’t buy it.
It’s clear to me that Sullivan got cold feet, and that he didn’t want to take a punt on an ‘unproven’ manager so to speak.
In my view, the fact that he’s won two league titles with Sporting and has completely transformed the way that they play is enough evidence to show that he is a top-class, truly elite manager.
Manchester United’s gain will very much be West Ham’s loss when it comes to Ruben Amorim, I can almost guarantee you that.
