West Ham United missed out on the Manchester United manager to be Ruben Amorim back in April.
It has been claimed that Ruben Amorim had actually agreed terms to become the new West Ham manager six months ago.
Julen Lopetegui was named as the man to replace David Moyes at the London Stadium in the end, and that’s looking like a poor decision from the board right now.
Amorim is now closing in on the Manchester United job, after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday (Independent).
That is so frustrating to me. The 39-year-old could be at the London Stadium now, but the owners chose to play it safe.
And it really doesn’t make sense to me whatsoever.
Make it make sense as West Ham thought Ruben Amorim was risky
It’s little wonder as to why the Manchester United fans are absolutely buzzing right now about the prospect of Amorim taking over at Old Trafford.
The 39-year-old Sporting boss is an exceptional young coach, and he has already won two league titles out in Portugal.
So why on earth did the Hammers owners not pull the trigger and appoint him in the summer??
It’s not like they haven’t taken so-called ‘punts’ in the past.
West Ham signed Jordan Hugill from Preston North-End in January 2018, for around £10 million (BBC).
However, the now 32-year-old experienced a shocking spell with the Hammers.
He didn’t score a single goal for West Ham, and actually only played three games for the club!
Hugill is widely regarded as one of the worst signings we have made in our history.
The striker was swiftly moved on in the summer of 2020 to Norwich City for around £5 million (The Evening Standard).
Thankfully we escaped relatively unscathed with Jordan Hugill.
However, how can the Hammers board be prepared to take a £10 million punt on an average striker from the Championship but not on one of the most exciting young managers in world football?
It just baffles me – I don’t understand and I never will.
Ruben Amorim was the man we really needed at West Ham, in order to make real progress as a club.
It’s just such a shame that the Hammers owners thought he was ‘too risky’.
