West Ham United face a really big problem, with one player in particular apparently dreaming of joining Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim, a manager the Hammers were close to appointing six months ago, is expected to be announced as the new Manchester United boss imminently (Sky Sports).
That in itself has frustrated many West Ham fans, after it emerged that David Sullivan got cold feet about meeting Amorim’s release clause, after the 39-year-old had already agreed personal terms to become our new manager.
The Hammers owners appointed Julen Lopetegui to replace David Moyes at the London Stadium in the end, and that decision is already looking questionable to say the least.
Had the West Ham board taken a punt and showed some real ambition by appointing Amorim in the summer, we undoubtedly would be in a better position as a club now.
And now the Hammers’ failure to appoint the Portuguese could come back to bite us once again…
West Ham could miss out on Richard Rios to Manchester United
Goal claimed back in the summer that Rios dreams of joining Manchester United, and that couldn’t be worse news for the Hammers.
West Ham desperately tried to bring the South American to the London Stadium in the summer, but we failed to do so in the end.
The Palmeiras star has absolutely everything that we lack in the middle of the park right now, what with his unrivalled energy, incredible power and pace, athleticism, dynamism and ball-carrying ability.
And with Amorim set to be named the new Man United manager, I think it could spell real trouble for the Hammers.
The 39-year-old is well-renowned for playing a 3-4-3 system, with a defensive midfield destroyer.
At Sporting, that man was Manuel Ugarte up until 2023, and he is coincidentally now a Manchester United player.
However, Amorim will undoubtedly want real competition and cover for the Uruguayan, when he takes over at Old Trafford.
And on paper, Rios seems to be the perfect signing for them. At the end of the day, if Manchester United make a move to sign the Colombia international, the Hammers will have no chance of bringing him to East London.
Richard Rios stats
The Colombian midfielder has been in fine form for Palmeiras over the past couple of years.
In 18 league games this season, he has bagged two goals and three assists.
During those appearances, the 24-year-old has averaged 2.4 tackles, 1.7 dribbles and has recorded an 84.7% pass completion rate (Who Scored).
From those stats you can see that he’s a tenacious tackling ball-carrier – someone who possesses pace, power and athleticism in abundance.
As mentioned earlier, he’d be absolutely perfect for the Hammers, considering our deficiencies in central midfield right now.
However, if Richard Rios really is dreaming of joining Manchester United, it will be game over for West Ham.
The Hammers should have made a concrete move to sign him in the summer transfer window just gone.
