Julen Lopetegui replaced David Moyes as West Ham United head coach back in the summer.
Firstly, I have to say, I am of the opinion that it was time for David Moyes to leave West Ham, but that doesn’t mean that I wanted Julen Lopetegui to replace him.
The Spaniard’s start to life in East London has been truly awful though, and there are clearly problems behind the scenes already.
There is no clear footballing identity on display, and the Hammers head coach looks like a man with no idea how to change things.
Enter David Moyes. The Scot has given the Hammers some advice.
However, one staggering thing he said reeked of no self-awareness.
You couldn’t make up what David Moyes just said about West Ham
The 61-year-old is still out of work right now, having left the Hammers nearly six months.
And he poked his nose into West Ham’s business on Sunday, sharing where he thinks we are going wrong.
When speaking on the Football Daily Podcast, Moyes responded when asked to give his opinion on Lopetegui.
The Scot said, “First of all, I’ve had a few defeats and have lost quite heavily a few different times as well so it happens for all managers.”
“I think the new manager coming in needs time and needs to be given that time and opportunity to set things to the way he wants them to happen.“
“They look as though they’re a bit more open than they’ve been before and more liable possibly to concede but they’re desperately trying to score more goals as well.“
“The players there must be a lot fresher, bigger energy, showing that but I just think the manager needs to be given that opportunity and a bit of time to settle things down.“
“Sometimes players need to perform as well and step up, I’m sure a few of them could play better and show the manager what they can do.”
It was nice of Moyes to urge patience, and demand that more time be given to Lopetegui.
However, you really couldn’t make up his comments on us looking too open.
Sure, we haven’t been good at all defensively this season, but has the Scot forgotten just how easy we were to play against last term?
We were ran through by teams on numerous occasions, and lost 5-0 at Fulham, 5-0 at Chelsea, 5-2 at Crystal Palace and 6-0 at home to Arsenal.
The Hammers conceded 74 Premier League goals as well! So I would suggest we’re just as open as we were last year.
And I have to reiterate my point again, I wanted David Moyes gone from West Ham, but Julen Lopetegui was quite possibly the worst replacement available to us.
Whether David Sullivan swallows his pride, admits he got it wrong and makes a change remains to be seen though.
