After spending 15 years at Everton, coming through the academy and making nine appearances for the first team, Tyias Browning has enjoyed huge success away from Goodison Park
Tyias Browning was once a promising talent at Everton before seeing his career take a different turn for the better after moving away from Goodison Park permanently. Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande paid £4million to the Blues in 2019 on the back of only nine appearances for the club.
Fast forward five years, and Browning is a multiple league champion with over 30 caps for the Chinese national team. He changed his name to Jiang Guangtai and is eligible to represent China because his maternal grandfather was Cantonese.
Browning has since switched to Guangzhou’s rivals, Shanghai Port. This past weekend, he won his second league title with his current club, successfully defending their crown.

Among his teammates is former Chelsea player Oscar, who was part of the wave of players moving to China seven years ago. Browning’s move has also proved financially rewarding.
He earned a multi-million-pound contract while playing in Asia. Despite the criticism levelled at players who chose to leave Europe for the Chinese Super League, the former Everton man insists the standard of play is much higher than many expect.
He previously explained: “It’s a lot more competitive than what people think, and fans are extremely passionate when it comes to the game of football. There are a lot of things you have to adapt to on and off the pitch, the conditions being one of those, but I feel like I’ve adjusted to it well.
“People were saying I was a bit young to come to China, but I came here for a new challenge, and I’m enjoying it,” he told the Mirror back in 2019. Browning’s ambition is now to represent China at the World Cup someday.
