West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta has experienced a really difficult past 15 months or so.
Lucas Paqueta signed for West Ham from Lyon in the summer of 2022, for a fee believed to be worth around £50 million.
However, he has failed to hit the heights that were expected of him at the London Stadium, mainly due to his ongoing problems off the field regarding potential betting breaches.
He apparently faces a lifetime ban if found guilty.
Tony Cascarino suggested earlier this week that Paqueta has been miles off the pace this season, and he’s right.
The former Lyon man has let us down time and time again this season, and now he’s causing a real problem at the club it seems.
New Lucas Paqueta claim means West Ham must take action
The Brazil international has been a big problem for us so far this term.
Not only is he not playing in a consistent position – that’s down to Lopetegui, but he is causing us issues everywhere he is playing.
Something has to change, and fast.
According to a report from The Sun, Paqueta is one of the biggest problems at the London Stadium right now, when it comes to the lack of leadership and discipline.
If that really is the case, the question has to be asked: why is he starting week in, week out?
The Brazilian has been nothing other than a liability for us so far this season.
Sure, he has a lot going on off the pitch, but if he is finding it impossible to focus on match-days, Lopetegui needs to leave him out of the team.
With just two goals to his name for us this season – one of them a penalty – he hasn’t contributed anywhere near enough as he should’ve done inside the final third.
As mentioned earlier, Lucas Paqueta has become a liability defensively for West Ham as well.
Lopetegui has to be big enough, and brave enough, to drop the underperforming South American from his starting XI.
I won’t hold my breath though – it seems to me like Paqueta is bulletproof.
