Ange Postecoglou does not appear to be on the verge of being sacked at Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur suffered their fifth defeat of the new Premier League season on Sunday afternoon, losing 2-1 to newly promoted Ipswich Town at home.
The result meant Spurs finished the weekend in tenth, having accumulated just 16 points from their opening eleven games. It has prompted questions over the quality and mentality of the Lilywhites’ squad as well as the position of Ange Postecoglou.
The performance of Tottenham players in the defeat to Ipswich Town was roundly booed after the full-time whistle at home on Sunday. Like Ipswich, Crystal Palace also got their first win of the season by beating Ange Postecoglou’s side last month.
Former Premier League winner Alan Shearer slammed Spurs’ performance at the weekend, but insisted that Ange Postecoglou is not under pressure. Despite the team from north London producing mixed results from the start of the season, he doesn’t feel this should be alarming for the Greek-Australian tactician as his side remain only three points behind the top four.
While discussing Spurs along with Gary Lineker and Micah Richards on the Rest is Football podcast, when asked if Postecoglou was under pressure at the Hotspur Way, Shearer responded:
“Typical Spurs though, isn’t it? My goodness me. They beat City at home, they beat Villa at home with a great win, and then you got Ipswich at home. Ipswich turn you over.
“I don’t think so [Postecoglou under pressure]. No, I think you just look at it like that, he took responsibility, didn’t he? He said it’s his fault, his problem. He’s got to sort it out. But when you see them in the second half against Villa and then beating City, it’s just, it’s the inconsistency again. How long have we been saying that about Spurs?”
Spurs fans would have been fed up after witnessing the chronic inconsistency levels in performances and results since the turn of the year. Big Ange did a fine job in his first season in north London, clinching fifth place in the Premier League and subsequently a spot in the Europa League.
With a decent amount of money poured in the summer window to reinforce the squad, fans would have expected the team to improve defensively and stop making silly errors. However, that hasn’t happened as Big Ange and his coaching staff are yet to fix the glaring deficiencies at the back.
Only three points behind third-placed Chelsea and a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals means Tottenham are not a million miles away from achieving their objectives—a piece of silverware and a spot in the Champions League—but the unpredictable nature of performances and results will be worrying for Big Ange.

The 59-year-old has to make the best use of the international break to understand and fix his team’s problems. As for now, the ex-Celtic manager seems to have plenty of credit in the bank for the good job he’s done since arriving at N17 in 2023.
