West Ham are currently in the midst of £5m improvement works at their Rush Green training ground, Hammers News can confirm.
West Ham’s training facilities have been a longstanding joke among fans – both inside and outside the club.
The Hammers are doing something about it as we speak, though, we can reveal.
There have been calls for the owners to keep up with rival clubs by giving West Ham a modern, state-of-the-art training complex befitting a top Premier League and – for the last three years – European outfit.
Former Hammers boss David Moyes actually spoke out in the past about wanting the club to use some of the money invested by Czech billionaire co-owner Daniel Kretinsky to improve the training ground.
The Scot even even revealed the club had to shift training to the London Stadium before the 6-0 defeat to Arsenal earlier this year because pitches at Rush Green were not good enough.
Fans slammed the club on social media when the West Ham United lettering from the wall outside was not replaced after falling down.
The club were then criticised for replacing a missing ‘M’ with an upside down ‘W’.
West Ham’s training ground is the butt of many a joke and gives opposition fans a good laugh.
West Ham’s £5m Rush Green improvement works in progress
But there is a serious side to the situation given it can help attract – and keep – players. It’s also important to have top facilities given the club is home to a host of multi-million pound assets.
Earlier this year it was claimed West Ham might be eyeing up land to build a new training complex.
That was denied, though, with the top spokesman close to the owners telling Hammers News millions would be spent on the existing base instead.
Now West Ham’s £5m Rush Green training ground improvement works are in progress.
Anyone who watches the club’s video footage from training may have spotted scaffolding and what appears to be a large new building being constructed at the training base.
A West Ham spokesman has revealed to Hammers News that works will continue until the end of January having previously stated ‘we’re improving it all the time’.
“We’re spending £5m on improvement works at the training ground,” the West Ham spokesman told Hammers News.
“The works are due to be finished at the end of January.”
The key senior contact said details of exactly what has been done will be communicated at some stage.
Leicester shelled out £100m, Spurs paid £45m and Brighton £20 for state-of-the-art training bases in recent years.

While many might prefer to see the club invest those kind of sums, the elephant in the room is at least being addressed.
From the footage it seems as though much of the work is taking place on the area in and around the floodlit pitch which has its own small viewing stand.
West Ham fans see their team at the weekends on matchdays, but it must be remembered they spend most of their time in and around Rush Green.
So it is absolutely vital those facilities are up to proper Premier League standards.
It will be interesting to see exactly what the revamp entails.
When it was revealed recently that striker Niclas Fullkrug was the latest injured foreign player to return to their home country for medical treatment, Hammers News called on the club to start seriously thinking about investing in a brand new multi-million pound complex.
West Ham won’t be getting that anytime soon.
But this is at least hopefully a step in the right direction.
