Tottenham to hold onto Son Heung-min until 2026
Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has made an injury-ridden start to the 2024/25 season. However, with three goals and three assists to his name, he remains one of their most important men and arguably their best player. Son is in the final few months of his contract, which runs only till June 2025, though it has now emerged Spurs are taking the steps to keep him for longer.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Lilywhites are planning to trigger their extension option in the South Korean international’s deal which would see him stay at the club until June 2026. The finer details of the contract renewal, such as Son’s updated salary, are not known yet, though with Spurs having the unilateral option, the player is obliged to stay the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
Son’s contract extension until 2026 is very good news for Tottenham as they could ill-afford to lose him next summer on a free transfer. They have not invested any money in the transfer market to bring in a replacement and it does look like young Mikey Moore is being developed to be the Asian star’s long-term replacement. Moore is still very inexperienced, so it would be good to have Son on-board for another year to ensure the 17-year-old is not rushed into the thick of first team action.
Moreover, Spurs are in a spot of bother as far as recent form goes. They suffered their first Europa League defeat at the hands of Galatasaray last week and lost to Ipswich Town in the Premier League just days later. With that in mind, Son’s experience and more importantly, security over his future, will nullify at least one of the club’s important concerns.
It remains to be seen if Tottenham are willing to renew Son’s contract beyond 2026 and if at all they are prepared to enter into negotiations with him in the near future itself. Alternatively, they may wait until this time next year to see how the 32-year-old is coping with age and decide whether or not to offer him another short-term deal, while the player could also have his say on wanting to explore another challenge in the dusk of his career.

Nevertheless, Son’s stay for the shorter run is fabulous news for Tottenham Hotspur as well as Ange Postecoglou.
