A West Ham United fan has caused major controversy during a big golf tournament being contested by the likes of Rory McIlroy.
West Ham and golf actually have a pretty strong connection.
Former top golf stars Francesco Molinari and Paul McGinley are massive West Ham fans.
American star and a serial winner on the PGA Tour, Billy Horschel, is a big Hammers supporter too.
Horschel has even become close friends with West Ham sporting director Mark Noble as a result.
A West Ham fan laid down a marker during the Ryder Cup over in Rome last year when they were spotted doing the crossed Hammers behind Justin Rose.
Now the Hammers have been making headlines on one of golf’s biggest stages yet again.
But unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.
West Ham fan causes major controversy live on TV
Because a West Ham fan has caused major controversy live on TV during the big DP World Tour golf tournament.
The likes of Rory McIlroy – who is one shot off tying for the lead in Dubai at the halfway stage – are jostling to win.
And it seems he was given a little help from a Hammers fan.
English golfer Paul Waring was tied for the lead on eight under when a West Ham supporter shouted “Irons” at the top of his voice during his downswing.
You could hear a pin drop as Waring took his swing. Until the Hammers fan belted out the famous West Ham phrase.
Waring was not one bit impressed with the off-putting shout from the West Ham fan.
Hammers embarrassment at DP World Tour golf tournament
There was no lack of irony in the fact Waring was hitting an irons shot.
The incident has gone viral across golf channels on social media.
It’s also been described by Sky Sports Golf commentators as “nasty”.
“That was nasty. A shout from a fan during Waring’s backswing on his 70-yard approach came a bit too early and seemingly put the Englishman off,” Sky Sports said.
National Club Golfer also posted the incident, saying: “You hate to see it.
“A fan shouting on Paul Waring’s backswing.”
Some may find it funny. But Waring shanked his shot on the Par 4 10th, where he was on for another potential birdie.
He fell apart after the incident dropping right down the leaderboard.
That kind of behaviour is seriously frowned upon in golf.
So it doesn’t paint West Ham fans in a particularly good light.
Waring put off his irons by Irons shout
Despite it being as clear as day, the fact it is a West Ham related chant seems to have escaped the attention of most.
Now it’s been posted across social media, though, it won’t be long before it is picked up.
Let’s leave the West Ham themed golf moments to Horschel in future Hammers fans.
McIlroy is a big Man United fan.
So this particular Hammers supporter has inadvertently helped out the Red Devil, whose had plenty of major trophy success compared to someone like Waring.
A distasteful moment West Ham won’t want to be associated with.
