Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman was not called up to the French national team by Didier Deschamps for the last two international breaks for UEFA Nations League matches, but that is not the case this time around.
Deschamps made the decision to recall Coman to the Le Bleus squad along with fellow Bayern teammates Dayot Upamecano and Michael Olise, though Coman was technically a late addition to the squad due to Ousmane Dembélé needing to withdraw as a result of a right hamstring injury.
For Coman, this will be his first time back with the French national team since the Euros over the summer; a tournament in which he predominantly featured in as a substitute, making a total of just one appearance. He came on for a 15-minute cameo in France’s 0-0 draw against the Netherlands in Leipzig.
From France’s training camp ahead of their Nations League matches against Israel and Italy, Deschamps said he has seen an improvement in Coman’s performances for Bayern ever since the Euros. He knows that the player himself is well aware of the fact that he did not exactly set the world on fire at the Euros.
“At the Euros, he wasn’t at the level he’s been at for the past ten days. I had the opportunity to talk to him. He knows it, he wasn’t at his best. He came back gradually. Even he told me that he has room for improvement, but he’s found some very good feelings again. When he’s at his best, he has a very important role to play here,” Deschamps explained, even though Coman was technically a late callup to the squad after Dembélé had to withdraw (via @iMiaSanMia).
For Coman, it is always going to be a difficult task to outshine the likes of Dembélé, Kylian Mbappé, Marcus Thuram, Michael Olise, Randal Kolo Muani, Bradley Barcola, and Christopher Nkunku in the French attack, but Deschamps has at least taken notice of the chances he’s been given under Vincent Kompany thus far. His injury luck with the French national team has been far from fair, but that will not spot Coman from continuously fighting for his place in Deschamps’ squad selections.
