West Ham United have responded exclusively to Hammers News after a big claim about Julen Lopetegui’s future.
Speculation has been rife over Julen Lopetegui’s future at West Ham.
The Hammers are 14th in the Premier League, closer to the bottom than the top six.
West Ham are also out of the Carabao Cup – limiting their chances of achieving the aim of qualifying for Europe this season.
But it is actually performances, or the lack of them, which is most worrying Hammers fans.
Supporters have been baffled by just how bad their side has looked under the Spaniard.
Especially after a £155m summer splurge on nine players.
Many of those signings seriously excited fans and hopes were high for a successful campaign.
Lopetegui has failed to inspire thus far, though.
He has managed to oversee just three Premier League wins from 11 games.
West Ham top brass respond after big Lopetegui claim
Two of those have been deemed extremely fortunate in the shape of wins at Palace and against Man United.
A plethora of managers have been linked as potential replacements for the 57-year-old.
It was claimed Lopetegui went home to Spain in the ‘misguided belief’ his job as Hammers boss is safe.
Former West Ham assistant coach Edin Terzic has been heavily linked with the job.
West Ham reportedly ‘put Terzic on standby’ after the 4-1 humbling at Spurs.
There has been claim and counter claim about Lopetegui’s immediate future.
Particularly after the dismal 0-0 draw with Everton last weekend.
Some journalists have even suggested he could be sacked during the international break.
Now there has been a major update from a spokesman for the owners.
West Ham top brass have responded to Hammers News after a BBC journalist’s big Lopetegui claim.
BBC Sport reporter Simon Stone claims his sources have told him Lopetegui still has 100% backing.
But, tellingly, he adds that ‘results have to improve’ and ‘the pressure is on Lopetegui to deliver’.
‘We do not think’ – what West Ham’s owners said on Lopetegui
“Amid massive speculation about his future, club sources have told me they are still 100% behind Lopetegui but that results have to improve,” Stone said.
“The Hammers have some tough games ahead – a trip to Newcastle immediately after the international break and a London derby against Arsenal straight after that.
“The pressure is on Lopetegui to deliver.”
Many fans feel sticking by Lopetegui is simply delaying the inevitable with those daunting fixtures on the horizon.
Newcastle have beaten Forest 3-1, Arsenal 1-0 and Chelsea 2-0 in their last three games.
The Hammers have to go to St James’ Park under the lights on a Monday night.
Given the way Lopetegui’s side have defended all season, giving up shots at their goal far too easily, fears that two heavy defeats could be on the cards are understandable.
But the owners do not see it like that.
Hammers News asked the spokesman for the owners about the situation in light of Stone’s claims and with a week having passed since the Everton draw.
Fan fears of two big losses were also put to the club.
To which the spokesman for the owners responded: “We do not think two heavy defeats are inevitable.”
