Julen Lopetegui is apparently ready to make a very bold call with West Ham United midfielder Guido Rodriguez it seems.
West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui brought Guido Rodriguez to the London Stadium on a free transfer in the summer.
It was claimed only yesterday that Rodriguez hasn’t enjoyed his start to life under Lopetegui at West Ham.
The 30-year-old is said to be struggling to adapt to the pace of Premier League football, and that has been painfully obvious to see so far.
The Hammers’ geriatric midfield has been a big problem this season, and Rodriguez has been the chief culprit.
So could Lopetegui make a ruthless decision that’s actually been a very long time coming?
Julen Lopetegui won’t hesitate to make Guido Rodriguez decision
The former Real Betis man has really struggled for the Hammers so far this season.
Rodriguez’s lack of mobility and athleticism has been symptomatic of our problems in central midfield.
Now Lopetegui could be set to wield the axe.
According to a report from Spanish publication Sport, Lopetegui will not hesitate to drop Rodriguez if he doesn’t improve quickly.
In all fairness, he has been really poor on the whole for the Hammers this season.
However, Lopetegui has started the 30-year-old in every single Premier League game, so he clearly rates him highly.
That said, he did haul the South American midfielder off before half-time during our 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea back in September.
Aside from his fine first-half display away at Tottenham in October, Guido Rodriguez has failed to impress for West Ham, and Julen Lopetegui could well wield the axe soon.
The Hammers face a trip to Newcastle after the international break, and it will be interesting to see whether the Argentina international retains his place in the side.
I wouldn’t be surprised one little bit if Rodriguez finds himself on the bench sooner rather than later.
