Jarrod Bowen scored in England’s thrashing of the Republic of Ireland and Harry Kane thinks the West Ham star should’ve played more.
There was disbelief at West Ham last month when Jarrod Bowen was snubbed by interim England boss Lee Carsley.
When Carsley did the same for the November internationals, that disbelief turned to anger in West Ham circles.
As highlighted by Hammers News, only five English players in the Premier League have a higher match rating than Bowen with the Irons this season.
But it took nine withdrawals for Carsley to be forced to go cap in hand to West Ham’s captain for games against Greece and Republic of Ireland.
Bowen worked hard for the team and played a key part in a killer third goal in the 3-0 win in Greece.
The Hammers hero was back on the bench for the visit of Ireland to Wembley, though.
Much to the frustration of West Ham fans.
Especially after a new revelation about Bowen left Carsley red-faced as he brought his brief England tenure to an end.
West Ham’s Prague hero finally got a reward for his patience and commitment, though.
Hammers ace Bowen gets first England goal with first touch
The Hammers talisman scored a brilliant goal with his first touch after coming on as a sub.
He did his trademark knee-slide West Ham fans will never forget from their night of European glory last summer.
Bowen’s statistics are right up there with the likes of Bukayo Saka. But many fans feel a “big six” bias still exists in the England setup, hampering a player like Bowen.
The Arsenal star pulled out of the squad along with Bowen’s other direct rivals Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish.
Yet Noni Madueke still started ahead of him despite his indifferent form for Chelsea.
Bowen proved his point to Carsley and all those doubting him with his excellent finish in the rout.
West Ham’s main man might actually have had another but for a smart save from Caoimhin Kelleher.
After the game there was a classy touch from England’s skipper.
Harry Kane singled out West Ham star Bowen and suggests he should’ve played more for England.
Kane suggests Bowen should’ve played more for England
And former Hammers star Ian Wright agrees.
“Yes it’s amazing (to see Bowen and other debutants score),” Kane said on ITV after the game.
“We spoke in the week about opportunities for new lads and opportunities for lads who have been here and not quite got the minutes.
“And they showed out there why they’re here you know. A couple of great finishes.
“It was nice for Jarrod to come on and score straight away so that worked pretty well as well…
“I’m sure he’ll (Thomas Tuchel) will be looking at everyone and come March hopefully the lads will be ready.”
Ex Hammers striker Wright agreed with Kane about Bowen.
The pundit believes Bowen has more quality when cutting in on goal than his rivals for a starting spot.
“Obviously (Anthony) Gordon and Madueke are very good at running with it at pace,” Wright said.
“You know Jarrod Bowen has got the same pace, he’s got that directness. But he seems to have a little bit more quality about him when he cuts inside like he does or if he finds himself in a position like we found him on the edge.
“If you watch him at West Ham he’s very direct, very good with the ball… The thing is as the ball is coming at pace, he’s just kept that ball low, got his knee over it and well (what a finish).”
Roy Keane also said he felt it would have been demoralising for Ireland looking over and seeing a quality player like the West Ham talisman coming on ‘wanting to put a marker down’.
