Rival fans are already fearing Manchester City‘s dominance will continue for years to come following reports that Pep Guardiola has agreed to sign a contract extension with the Premier League champions.
Guardiola’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and there has been speculation that the Spanish manager could walk away from the Etihad next summer.
But, according to The Athletic, Guardiola is now ready to pen a new one-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, meaning he could remain at City until 2027.
An official announcement is expected this week, with Guardiola due to extend his stay at City to a decade and potentially beyond.
City have won the last four Premier League titles, and their rivals are already concerned that Guardiola could lead his side to another two in the coming seasons.
One fan account posted on X: ‘Pep Guardiola to stay for another year at Manchester City. This could be 6 Premier League titles in a row then.’
Pep Guardiola has reportedly agreed to stay at Man City, leading to rival fans fearing that they will struggle to overhaul the Spaniard’s team
Arsenal have finished second to City in each of the last two seasons, with Mikel Arteta urging the club’s fans to remain patient and trust the process.
But some feel their lengthy wait for a league title which stretches back to 2004 may be set to go on until Guardiola moves on.
‘Process officially starts in 2026/27 season, talk soon,’ one Arsenal fan wrote on X.
Guardiola has won six league titles, four League Cups, two FA Cups and the Champions League during a golden period at City.
One fan has suggested Guardiola is only sticking around to pile more misery on City’s rivals.
‘Pep Guardiola extending his contract, what more does this guy want?’ they asked.
In contrast, City fans have been left ecstatic with the news, with one supporter account claiming Guardiola staying is ‘bigger than winning any trophy’.
This is set to be the third time that Guardiola has signed a contract extension at City in the month of November.
City went on to win the Treble in the same season that Guardiola signed his last contract extension
On the two previous occasions in 2020 and 2022, respectively, City went on to win the title later that season both times.
In fact, his previous contract extension two years ago kickstarted an upturn in form that led to City winning an unprecedented Treble that season.
This time around, City have work to do after losing their last four matches in all competitions.
Their slump prior to the international break sees them five points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, but Guardiola deciding to stay put could be the boost his players need to find an extra gear as they go in search of more silverware.
