Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day
Tottenham Hotspur’s bid to bounce back to winning ways in the Premier League failed on Boxing Day as they lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.
Anthony Elanga’s 28th-minute strike on the break turned out to be the winner in the end, leaving Ange Postecoglou’s side in the bottom half of the table. It means Spurs have lost more games than they have won in the Premier League so far and are currently 11th in the table. The North Londoners are closer to the relegation zone than they are to the top.
Ange Postecoglou has had a lot of problems to deal with in his second season at White Hart Lane. One of the biggest reasons why Tottenham have underperformed is because of their unprecedented injury list. They have had several players over weeks and months. This has had a toll on the available players as they’ve had to play a game every three/four days, with the Lilywhites alive in all competitions.
The Tottenham gaffer faced the media after the 1-0 loss to Forest and gave his views on different topics. Postecoglou insisted that he cannot demand any more from his current squad in terms of effort and commitment, given the lack of options and recovery time between games.
“Look we’re asking a lot of this group of players, a lot of these guys are playing every three days. It’s only logical they are not going to be at their sharpest but they are trying and that’s all I can ask of them,” Postecoglou was quoted by Football London.
Truly, the squad has been stretched in various areas owing to persistent injury problems. In addition to the defeat at Forest, Big Ange suffered two more setbacks—Djed Spence was shown a second yellow and Radu Dragusin came off injured.
The team simply cannot catch a break from injuries and suspensions. Dragusin being forced off with an ankle problem means the Australian tactician has no fit centre-backs left at his disposal heading into the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The game against Forest was Tottenham’s fourth in the space of two weeks, which is a lot given the injury situation and lack of squad depth Big Ange is overseeing. This further demonstrates the need for reinforcements across the pitch.
