Bayern Munich had a bit of a goalkeeper merry go round with Manuel Neuer injured for a part of it, Sven Ulreich away due to personal matters and Daniel Peretz deputizing in his first season at his new club. Here’s how they did in the first half of the season.
#1 Manuel Neuer
1592 minutes, 10 clean sheets, 13 goals conceded
Score: 7.5/10
Manuel Neuer took a lot of criticism this season for some rather uncharacteristic errors — Jhon Duran’s attempt over his head against Aston Villa comes to mind. He came out of his box more than other keepers and stood at the halfway line when bored. Neuer was himself but showed some signs of aging. Yet, when other alternatives were on the pitch, it was easy to see that Neuer remained the best option for Bayern on the pitch. He remains pivotal to Bayern’s style of play. The Bayern captain and #1 might just receive a contract extension to keep his place on the throne.
#18 Daniel Peretz
537 minutes, 1 clean sheet, 7 goals conceded
Score: 6/10
It is harsh to be too critical of a goalkeeper who just moved to the club. However, the goals conceded say it all. While not overly at fault for any of the seven goals Bayern conceded on his watch, he has not been super confident either in goal. He also does not quite hold the positions that Neuer holds. His distribution has been praised but the main job of a goalkeeper is to protect the goal. Seven goals conceded in 537 minutes is far too many.
#26 Sven Ulreich
135 minutes, 1 clean sheets, 2 goals conceded
Score: N/A
Sven Ulreich has been unavailable for a portion of the season due to personal matters away from the pitch. Unfortunately, he has not been able to participate to the extent he would liked to and has been missed.
