Julen Lopetegui was a relieved man when the referee blew the full-time whistle at the end of the Southampton vs West Ham United clash on Boxing Day.
West Ham have been awful on the whole this season under Julen Lopetegui, there are no two ways about it.
It was only last week when it was claimed that Lopetegui could be sacked ‘immediately’, and replaced by one of Maurizio Sarri, Max Allgeri or Graham Potter.
A run of eight points from the Hammers’ last four games has strengthened his case to remain in charge at the London Stadium though.
Wins over Wolves and Southampton have accompanied draws with Bournemouth and Brighton, and West Ham are now sitting just five points adrift of seventh placed Manchester City.
That’s quite the turnaround from just a few weeks ago.
I personally think we’ve been very lucky to pick up the points we have this season, and I truly believe that Lopetegui is not the man we need to take us to the next level.
Now though, an incredibly demoralising claim has emerged regarding the Spaniard.
Julen Lopetegui claim after West Ham beat Southampton
With a tough run of fixtures ahead, Lopetegui is certainly still under pressure.
That said, he has undoubtedly bought himself some time after our last four results.
I just don’t see any kind of future under Lopetegui though – there are countless managers out there who would be a better fit for us, free agents as well, like Graham Potter and Maurizio Sarri for example.
And that’s what makes the latest claim so hard to accept.
According to BBC Sport, the Hammers’ recent run of form means that Lopetegui may well have a future at the club now.
If the 58-year-old is here for the long-term, I think it would be an absolute travesty.
He’s a terrible fit for the club, end of story.
Not only has the football been utterly turgid this season, but he doesn’t seem to be a very good man-manager either.
It is alleged that he has fallen out with at least three Hammers players, including Mohammed Kudus and Jean-Clair Todibo after half-time altercations.
Julen Lopetegui still doesn’t know his best West Ham team, despite the fact that he’s been at the club for six months now!
He’s far too pragmatic, and will never be able to achieve the remit of introducing an exciting playing style at the London Stadium.
If we don’t pick up points against Liverpool, Manchester City and Fulham in our next three Premier League games, and get dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa, it will be interesting to see whether the board take action or not.
Annoyingly, it seems as though Lopetegui’s job is safe for now.
