Duran and Rogers Suspension Situation
Aston Villa’s upcoming clash with Leicester City will be played without two of their most influential attacking players, as both Jhon Durán and Morgan Rogers are unavailable due to suspensions. The timing isn’t ideal, with both players proving the bright sparks in Villa’s campaign so far, sitting second and third on the club’s Premier League scoring charts behind Ollie Watkins.
Rogers Reaches Suspension Threshold
Morgan Rogers, who has been a revelation since joining the club, picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in the recent draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. This booking, in the final game before the yellow-card suspension threshold increased to 32 matches, means Rogers will miss the Leicester match. The setback is frustrating, especially considering his tally of six league goals and three assists has been pivotal to Villa’s attacking output this season.
Silver Lining for Duran
Meanwhile, Jhon Durán will serve the second of his three-match suspension following his red card for ‘violent conduct’ in the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United. The dismissal has already sidelined Durán for the Premier League fixture against Brighton, with his final suspended game coming in the FA Cup third-round tie against West Ham United. Unlike yellow-card suspensions, red cards apply across domestic cup competitions.
Many Villa supporters will see having the last game of Duran’s ban absorbed into the Hammers game as a positive.
Both Durán and Rogers will be eligible to return for Villa’s Premier League trip to Everton on January 15th. With Ollie Watkins leading the line and boasting eight goals this season, Villa still have firepower in their ranks. However, the absences of Durán (seven goals) and Rogers (six goals) for the Leicester game will disrupt Emery’s plans, especially with the team needing to capitalise on their home form and get a much-needed win as they aim to reignite their top-five push.
Villa fans will undoubtedly hope the duo’s enforced rest fuels a strong return in mid-January. In the meantime, Emery will be thankful that at least Jacob Ramsey has returned to the fold, ensuring the team should remain competitive even without two of their brightest talents.
