Everyone has been expecting Bayern Munich to offload one or two of the three veteran wingers for a while now. Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry give the impression that their best years are past them.
With Jamal Musiala and Michael Olise bursting onto the stage this season and performing considerably better than their veteran counterparts, it feels like a transition is on the verge of completion. With the club expressing interest in the signing of Florian Wirtz, Xavi Simons, and Jonathan David (with possibly more to follow in the future), it makes sense to offload the current crop of wingers when their market value is still decent.
Heck, even if they all leave on free transfers, which is a possibility… this would free up considerable sums from the wage bill, which could be useful in tying down attractive wing prospects for longer durations.
I have always rated Sané highly, and to me, he is definitely the most valuable of the lot. However, it has been reported that a contract extension is unlikely unless the player has a ‘performance explosion’, which, although plausible, doesn’t seem likely given what we’ve seen overall from the player this season. Coman and Gnabry display flashes of brilliance, but these are shadowed by them being consistently inconsistent.
If Bayern Munich invests in a winger or two in the coming window, all three players are as good as gone. However, this huge transition is absolutely contingent on Bayern acquiring quality options. The club will likely not pull the trigger on all three players before it has solidified replacements.
My hunch is that Bayern has its targets in sight and will be successful in its pursuit.
And that means adieu to the three wingmen.
